How To Use Long Tail Keywords And How To Find Them

by Remi Vladuceanu on January 2, 2010

It’s been said a gazillion times that long tail keywords are the key to a proper keyword targeting campaign. And that is simply because long tail keywords are what’s left after the competition grabbed all the good juicy more general keywords.

But don’t worry. There’s plenty of traffic to squeeze out of those long tail keywords. The only issue is how to find them. And for that I always use the Google Adwords External Keyword Tool witch is free and anyone can use it to get an idea on the keywords they are targeting.

Don’t worry if you get “not enough data” as a result. It might say that the competition is so low or that the search volume is so low that Google can’t evaluate it. The way around this is to check for keywords related to your main search see if those keywords have some juice in them.

Only make sure you select only those keywords that are the most relevant to your keyword search campaign meaning the actual targeting of the particular keyword. Also look for what the competition is doing when you search for those keywords in Google. Also take a particular interest in the first positions in Google Search Result page. What kind of websites are those that rank the highest? Blogs? Forums? Article Directories? Etc.

It also depends on the niche you are targeting. In some cases the long tail keywords are simply not worth the effort because they don’t get any results. Nevertheless there is also the Google Adwords Ads trick. You simply search for the targeted keywords in Google and see if there are advertisements showing up in the right side of the search result page.

If the niche is a winner you will probably see some ads. So competition is not bad after all. But if you see tens of pages of Google ads, that’s not the best sign. It means the competition is very high and advertisers simply cannot use the traditional SEO techniques to try and rank in the search engines so they turn to Google Adwords.

Sometimes long tail keywords can be specific shopping keywords that someone is searching for or searching to buy something witch is a good thing because if you can target those keywords it means literary money in your pockets. And if you can add some related keywords in the specific text or article or what ever, you can rank even better since Google sees it as being very relevant.

All in one make sure to integrate the long tail keywords to be relevant with the website you are publishing your content on. Those keywords won’t get a ton of traffic that’s for sure but you can definitely cache some commissions along the way.

Stay focused and do your long tail keyword research every day. Set a target of 1000 or 100 keywords every day and process those keywords by implementing them into your content and you will definitely prosper!
