Can You Really Build A Successful Online Business Without Google?

by Remi Vladuceanu on January 15, 2010

Today everyone is obsessed about search engine optimization, targeted keywords, and generally, how to get the search engines to work for you, meaning how to make Google like you?

You can see it all over the place. Hundreds or maybe thousands of forums, not to mention the other media channels like social networking platforms, placed filled with webmasters trying to figure out the secrets behind Google and how to make money online by milking Google.

Now, I’m not suggesting that you should forget about Google and search engine optimization. After all it is very important to have a presence in the search engines. And especially in these competitive times, we need all the sources of traffic we could possibly get. Be that free or paid.

But relying on a single source for traffic, a single entity if you like, that essentially makes your business work, is a big mistake. And it’s not only my opinion. It’s the experts who talk about this.

They talk about how to diversify your portfolio, just like in the investment world. In order to lower your risk, it’s a good thing to divide your investment and place it in as many opportunities you possibly can.

But the question is: can you make it without Google? And my answer is: Yes, you can!

If you haven’t noticed, social media took a giant leap lately with the cutting edge social networking platforms like Facebook or Twitter. Yes, socializing can make your business flourish a hundred times better than focusing on using Google.

I’m talking about hundreds of millions of potential visitors to your website! And you don’t have to wait for some miracle that will get you to #1 position in Google in order to get that kind of traffic. Sometimes it can happen overnight starting with a sparkling idea.

It’s not fairytales, its reality. People have come out of anonymity with a single brilliant idea, got the information out to the world in various forms like blogging, twitter, facebook, etc., some respected influential member of a community picked it up and passed it along through the social media’s giant net and there’s your recipe for success.

And this is only one way to do things without Google. Imagine what you could accomplish by advertising on other websites in your industry, or send out a press release, or using Pay-Per-Click advertising. The possibilities are endless…

I agree, Social networking can have an influence but choose your friends wisely.
Your social network should include people or businesses that are in the same field you are promoting, as much as we would love to be able to make it without Google the fact is they are the biggest fish in the sea at this point Google is going to be showing more and more search results based on your social networking circle.

Exactly my point Brett.

Everything seems to shift to social media and Google is not going to loose ground.

Theoretically you could achieve success without Google if you could somehow get on the mainstream media. But then again, that would require you to be some sort of an expert or celebrity… :)

Thanks for your comment Brett.

Hi Remi,

Thanks for being a regular visitor of my blog, and thanks for the great comment you left me yesterday.

I totally agree, you should never rely on one source of traffic, and the majority of my traffic actually comes from other blogs that I’ve left a comment on… Only about 10% of my traffic comes from the search engines.

However as an experiment I am going to try and rank on the first page of Google for a few keywords, because I know I could be getting a lot more traffic from the big G, and it’s not exactly hard to do either, it’s just time consuming unless you outsource.

I also used to get a decent amaount of traffic from Twitter and Facebook, so I really need to start being more active on those sites again, I’ve just been too busy with other things recently.

Take care,

Paul

Paul,

No, thank you again for the valuable content you’re putting out on your blog and help so many people and thanks for visiting my blog and for your feedback about traffic.

And you’re right! We both know how important search engines are for getting traffic. And its true also that’s not too hard to rank well. But the truth being told it all depends on the particular keywords and how much competition is going on in the marketplace for that particular keyword.

But if you can outsource the link building stuff you could rank pretty well even for some high competitive keywords.

Thanks again,

Remi

I think it is difficult if without the help of search engines such as Google

10 Remi April 7, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Actually you can if you build yourself a double opt-in list of subscribers and prospects targeted to your niche. Then all you need to do is market to that list without any help from Google. And these days Social Media is such a big phenomenon that anyone can start out easily using Facebook and Twitter.
Think about it… ;)
