In the last article we talked about the first 5 of 10 things you didn’t know about social media. Now it’s time to find out more about the last 5. So, here it goes:
6. Did you know that StarBucks has a special website dedicated to its customers where they can share their own original ideas? I think it’s the best social media ‘trick’ of 2009! It gets people involved, making them feel like part of a special group AND it gives valuable feedback to StarBucks that could cost them millions of dollars in traditional advertising costs. This is genius! Think about it… and check it out at: www.Mystarbucksidea.com
7. Have you ever heard about The Motrin case? If you didn’t then let me explain… It all started in November 2008… Motrin – a Johnson & Johnson product – posted a video ad online outlining the ills of wearing a baby sling. Although in and of itself the idea was not a bad one (after all, Motrin’s intention was to show mothers that it was thinking of their well-being and that they might find its product useful) the backlash showed that the ad had quickly become a flashpoint for controversy. And after 1,400 tweets, 395,000 search results and 90,000 video views Motrin announced on the official Motrin site that the ad would be removed (but almost one month later, the ad was still posted on the site’s home page).

8. Back in the late 1990s, there was a day (let’s call it October 19th, 1997) when suddenly every company in the western world decided they needed a website. Not that anyone knew what a website was for. Was it a brochure? A storefront? A billboard? The geeks say “It’s a new way of doing business.” What the hell does that mean? What pushed everyone over the edge was that on October 19th, if you didn’t have a website you were invisible.
Not just hard to contact, invisible. Since then, social media was born but basically things didn’t change that much from the ‘engage’ perspective. Today we have a dozen or so social media platforms and Twitter is one of the, from the top. If you don’t ‘engage’ you are invisible.
9. Did you know Coca-Cola Company has a fan page on Facebook? It’s the new way of connecting companies with customers and a new way of branding. Coca-Cola is one of the few giant companies that quickly understood that having a presents on social media platforms such as Facebook, is the new era of marketing.
10. The famous online shoe retailer Zappos also does social marketing well. They have a total of 198 employees working on Twitter to help keep the company’s profile high and humanize the folks behind the shoe sales. The most distinguished thing they do is share the tweets of all the 198 employees on a dedicated web page on the company’s website.
